Does anyone know the Dari, Pashtu and Urdu words for "mongoose?"

Are there any interesting proverbs or idioms involving the mongoose?

I was hoping that information provided could be transliterated into English; I apologize for not understanding Arabic script.

    • In Dari texts, I've only seen mūsh xormā (= "date[-colored] mouse"). They may also use xadang and (less commonly) rāsu-ye mārgīr (= "snake-catcher weasel") which are used in (Iranian) Persian.

    Pronunciations guide:
    x = like Spanish j.
    a = hat
    ū = almost like in food
    ā = like father.
    ī = is like see
    o = almost like put
     
    Urdu:

    نمس - nims - derived from Arabic
    • (the "s" is pronounced as an "s", not as a "z")
    راسو - raasu - derived from Persian/Farsi
    • (su: pronounced as in super)
    نیولا - nevlaa or ne o laa - derived from Sanskrit
    • (ne: pronounced like bay, pay, hay, etc. ; o: pronounced as in bow)
    Pashto: according to this dictionary: کشو     kas̱ẖ-aw , نوليَ no-laey , نیولئِي nī-walaʿī

    Question: Is the Persian "margir" related to the Afghan/Dari "maar?"

    I have heard the phrase zahr-ee-maar (venom of the snake).

    Yes, it is related! margir or maargiir / maar-giir (as many of us would transliterate here) literally means snake-catcher, as Treaty indicated above where maar = snake.
