Hi,

I read the following in Wiki:

Pashto belongs to the Northeastern Iranian branch of the Indo-Iranian language family,[8] but Ethnologue lists it as Southeastern Iranian.[9]

Consequently, I think this must be the right forum.

This word, سپې, is primarily Pashto but I think it may be used as a loanword in some forms of Dari (Afgan Persian). It means 'dog' and is probably derived from Sanskrit श्वन् shvan, which also means 'dog'.

Please could you let me know the exact Pashto pronunciation?

    • It is pronounced spai, the ai being a rather flat and short diphthong.

    Dog in Darii is the usual: sag.

    Probably a question for the etymology forum, but couldn't this have descended from Avestan (I know NOTHING about this...).

    Also, does it really rhyme with ھَے? I'd say it's more like /e/ and not /ai/, but that's how I learned it. (I could, of course, be wrong!)
     
    I did try to say it is a flatter sound, but I think people from the East eg Pekhawar and Mardan might still slide in a diphthong.
