dava gli esempi

A music teacher is described as "dava gli esempi". WR dictionary translates "dare l'esempio a qualcuno" as "to set an example", but I've a feeling that isn't what is meant here.

The sentence:
"Mi ricordo quando dava gli esempi. Aveva una voce bellissima, suonava il pianoforte e poi con la voce ......faceva sentire il fraseggio, una voce staordinariamente musicale."

I initially thought it meant the teacher was showing his student how he should play, but doesn't "to give an example" translate with "fare un esempio" in Italian?

Is there a particular meaning to this expression in a musical context?

"Dare gli esempi" vuol dire fare una determinata cosa per indurre gli altri ad adoprarsi nello stesso modo. In questo caso la maestra cantava e suonava affinché gli studenti si impegnassero a migliorare.
