dead heap

I'm reading a book about theater (Backwards and Forwards) by David Ball, and at some point he says:

"If I fire a gun at you an you fall over in a dead heap, we have an action"

What is a dead heap??

I mean, if it's a heap, wouldn't you fall on it?

Is it a heap made of corpses?

Thanks in advance!

You don't fall on a heap. You fall in a heap (into the shape of a heap as if you are lifeless). You are the heap. The heap is made of you. :)

No, you become the heap. It's a figure of speech that means that you drop as if you were dead, into (becoming) an inert heap on the floor or ground.
