I am not sure about the meaning of "deafening self-consciousness" in the following sentence: "With hesitation, and with deafening self-consciousness, he entered the Public Library." Your explanation would be much appreciated.

    He is so self-conscious that he can't react normally to people and things in the library. He probably feels insecure and he is probably afraid that he will do something foolish.
