    Hi

One man says to another: It takes an average of nine to twelve pounds of grain or soybeans to produce one pound of
feedlot beef. Do you think there is any possible defense for industrial animal agriculture? (Voices of the Food Revolution/John Robbins)

Can I read the word "defense" above as meaning "justification"? So, "Do you think there is any possible justification for industrial animal agriculture?"

    Hello novice.

Yes that is what it means. :)

I take the reasoning to be something like this: It takes far too much edible food -- grain or soybeans -- to produce a pound of beef. By comparison, raising beef is wasteful and impossible to justify.
