Bonjour

Voici ma phrase en français pour le contexte :

Les alpinistes descendent en rappel.

Et ma traduction anglaise :

The mountain climbers / mountaineers are climbing down XXXX

Comment dit-on "descendre en rappel" en anglais svp?

Merci:).

"The mountain climbers are going down the mountain." Would be more correct. Or if the mountain climbers are previously mentioned you could use: "They are going down the mountain."

But if we want to be more specific, can we say:
The mountaineers are abseiling down the mountain (BrE)
The mountaineers are rappeling down the mountain (AmE)
    ?

This is a bit late, but I was actually looking for the French translation of the American English word "to rappel".

As Dearprudence highlighted, this is an American English word that conveys descending a vertical mountain face with a rope fixed at a higher point.

descendre en rappel = to rappel

I've never heard abseiling in North America, but assume it could be used just the same in the UK, India and other (former/) possessions.

    Hope that helps.

Learners should be careful to not use rappeling in countries outside of North America - unlike other American terms, this one is entirely unknown. The only term used here is abseiling.

And climbing down is perfectly good English, too; heaven knows why anyone thought otherwise. Similarly: climb up, climb over, climb into, climb out of...

But abseiling is the specific method.
