Dessert vs désert

I would like to know the difference (if any) between the pronunciation of "dessert" (the meal after the main course) and "désert" (the open and dry space such as Sahara).

I believe they are both pronounced like "day-sair"

    The difference is in the way the S sound is pronounced. In the case where there are two Ss, it's a soft S sound. When there is just one S it's a Z sound.

    So (sorry, wish I knew those phonetic symbols):
    Désert = DAY-ZAIR
    Dessert = DAY-SAIR
