Did you really think it never rains in Germany?

Hello.
M
I know that we say: I thought you were german.

But what about:

I thought it never rained in Germany.

Does “never rained” have to be “never rains”?

I know it’s a typo. But how come I can say I thought I never rains in Germany. (Shouldn’t rain be backshifted?)

I would backshift it and do it as "I thought it never rained in Germany."

But it could depend on what prompted the person to make the comment.
