    I would use "to" in your example in writing (definitely) and in conversation (probably).

    Is the preposition here as needed as in my first sentence?
    I prefer the "to" but I think it is OK either way. It is certainly frequently said that way.

    He admitted killing his wife. :tick:
    He admitted to killing his wife.:thumbsdown: (It might be OK, but is sounds wrong.)
