didn't use to smoke

a. I didn't use to smoke when I was in college. I think I must have smoked ten cigarettes in all in those four years.

Does that make sense or is it self-contradictory?
Does 'I didn't use to smoke' necessarily imply that I never smoked?

Many thanks.

10 cigarettes in 4 years is almost no smoking.

The phrase "I didn't use to smoke" means "I was not in the habit of smoking regularly." It does not mean "I never tried it".

Regular smokers often smoke 10 to 40 cigarettes every day. So 10 over 4 years is not "a regular habit".

    Thank you Dojibear,

    How about

    b. I didn't use to smoke when I was in college but I sometimes did.
    c. I didn't use to smoke when I was in college but I did once in while.

    ?
Would you say they work too or am I going too far?

    Many thanks
