I'm really curious about the differences of attain and obtain once they are put together.
Here comes the context.
1.More women are attaining positions of power in public life.
2. Billy have been trying to get the work promotion. He works really hard till the midnight in order to attain his ambition.
So can i replace the attain/attaining with obtaining/obtain ?

Thanks a lot!!All the best!!:)

Hello, Poleman. I think "attain" does a better job of describing the action of somebody who works hard or does other virtuous things to succeed at something.

To me, "obtain" is generally just a fancy word for "get".

owlman so you mean bascially obtain=get? and when you wanna express someone succeed at something or get something after alot of efforts you should use attain right?

That sounds like a good summary of what I was trying to say, Poleman.

If you use the search window at the top of the page, you'll find useful definitions for "obtain" and "attain" in WR's dictionary.
