discurrir un trazado

Hi,
I'm translating to English a text about a new cycle-lane. In Spanish, it says "se acometerá también la mejora estética y funcional de los viales por los que discurre el trazado", this meaning, there will be resurfacing works, new street furniture, trees, and so one, in the streets or road where the new cycle lane will be constructed.
My try: "The improvement, both aesthetic and functional, of the roads ..."
I know I am supposed to provide a complete translation, not only half of it, but I cannot find a way to say "el trazado discurre", which is such common phrase in Spanish! (at least, in journalism or descriptive texts, not in casual speech). It is used to talk about railway tracks, trekking, cycle-lane.
So, any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

We will also improve the design of the roadways not only in a more functional way but also better aesthetics from it's original design.
Here is my attempt, hopefully you will get additional ones.
