It existed solely for trade, and here its dismal location on the Volkhov river was an advantage, sonce this led via Lake Ladoga and the Neva river to the Gulf of Finland and , via several overland portages, down the Dvina to the the Baltic, the Dnepr to Kiev and Byzantium and the Volga to Central Asia.

Hello. Please help me with this word dismal here. This about the city of Novgorod. I saw that dismal means sometimes a land near to marsh area. But I translated this like disadvantage ( unfavourable ) location. Am I right? Thanks a lot.

Dismal means cheerless, dark, unpleasant, depressing, miserable. It can be applied to places or people. There used to be a cartoon dog called 'Dismal Desmond' who was permanently depressed.
