    ...may cause serious disorders in/to organisms...

    ...may cause damage to patients...
    ...may cause damage to organisms...
    "in" is ok, but rare.

    "Disorders" are "inside" of something.
    "Damaged" is caused to something from a force outside of it.

    This drug has been found to cause serious disorders in patients, is a very common type of phrase.

    You hear it in drug commercial advisories all the time: Can cause bleeding in patients with hypertensions, etc.

    Something could cause damage TO patients but create disorders IN patients.
