dive through

Hi, everyone:

BRISBANE, Australia - A man was bitten on the face by a crocodile when he accidentally collided with the reptile after diving through a wave at a surf beach in northeastern Australia, a newspaper reported Friday.

Martin said he was in waist-deep water when he dived through a wave and into the crocodile.

Could you describe for me the action of ”dive through a wave"?

Best wishes

Usually as the wave breaks, you jump head first into it with your arms extended. This action allows you to plow through the wave and emerge on the other side without being dragged too far back towards shore by the power of the wave.

As you can't see where you're going, it is possible to collide with a crocodile if you're particularly unlucky ;).
