    - Last night before she came, I had been playing puzzel with my wife.
    - I think "............., I had been doing a puzzle......" is better, right?

    Thanks a lot!

I have never heard "playing puzzle" (or "puzzel"). It sounds like there is a game called "Puzzle" that you had been playing.

...doing or completing[but not assembling] a crossword puzzle...?

Also, one can be "enjoying a puzzle" :)

"Solving" or "working on" a puzzle are also common.
