Do something to say goodbye

Hello!

What if I want to say that something was an act of saying goodbye, but I cannot use the common combination of verb + goodbye (wave goodbye, kiss goodbye, etc.)?

For example (context: she is asleep while someone is leaving):
She didn't as much as open her eyes xxx goodbye.

What should xxx be substituted with? Nothing? In goodbye?

Thank you! :)

If there is context you might not need the "goodbye".

"He saw her leaving. He was at a loss for words. All he could do was wave and smile."
