I'm looking for a good dicitionary of Portuguese and I was wondering if similarly to the Spanish DRAE, the portuguese had a dictionary.

Best regards,

Portugal is a republic, so we could never have a royal academy. ;)

A few years ago, a dictionary was published by the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, the Dicionário da Academia de Ciências.

This institution is the closest we have to the R.A.E., but it is nowhere nearly as powerful as the Spanish Royal Academy. In Portugal, language standards have historically been set by initiative of the government.

In my modest opinion, though, this is not the best dictionary of Portuguese around.

Sorry, I was trying to make an analogy...thanks for the information. Is there an online Portuguese dictionary that you would recommend?
