Doing the gardening or gardening?

    Please give us a little context. How someone just asked you, for example, what you’re doing these days? Or has someone just called you on the phone as you’re digging in the garden?

    My daughter hás an example in her workbook with a picture of a girl planting flowers and she has to fill in the gaps with these two options.

    "Doing the gardening" suggests (to me) that gardening is a regular activity that can't be avoided, like "doing the laundry".
    Just "I'm gardening" doesn't carry the same implication.
