Hi,
Does "domestic violence" in: "He was acquitted of domestic violence" sound right? If not, what should I replace it with?

Thank you,
Virr

  • Hi

Domestic violence is the correct phrase is you wish to describe spousal abuse, ie violence committed against the spouse or partner in a relationship.

    Hi

.......although whether it is a specific crime you get charged with or acquitted from in UK law, I'm not sure.
I believe that the police would deal with it as a domestic violence case, the courts would deal with the charge as assault.

    Cheers

I agree with NealMc: domestic violence is more of a category than a particular crime. Perhaps "he was acquitted of assault against his wife/lover/etc" would be more accurate?
