    Rubbing something in means that someone keeps talking about something that makes you feel embarrassed or upset. Another similar expression is, don't rub salt into the wound/stop going on about it.

    Bascially, "to rub it in" means to tell/remind someone of a failure of which they are already very self-consciously well aware.

    It's an emotional form of "rubbing salt in his wounds" (as mentioned previously).
