doubling with

Hi everybody,

I can't understand properly what this sentence is telling:

...he was going to see a show at the Apollo Theatre Billy Eckstein's band was doubling with the Nicholas Brothers—...

"Doubling with" means here that Billy's band was playing together with the Nicholas Brothers or that it was a show with two acts, one performing after the other?

    I forgot to mention that the Nicholas Brothers were a pair of famous tap dancers, so it might make more sense, knowing that, that they were performing together.

    I agree that this is uncommon. Normally, if they were separate acts you'd hear about one "opening for" the other, so it probably means they were playing together, as jason suggests.
