drift into

Hi, everyone

I am writing about a book and I would like to convey the idea that the author, in the middle of the book, put one optimistic style to one side and adopt a more pessimist point of view. I would like to know if you can use "drift" to say that.

"About halfway through the book, the author, in a sort of a unwitting manner, drifts into a more pessimistic vein"

Thank you
