Hi, everyone!
In amphibians hibernation occurs in mud or deep holes away from frost. North of the Pyrenees Mountains, the natterjack toad offers a good example of hibernation, passing the winter dug deep into sandy ground.
I can understand the meaning of the sentence, but I am confused by “dug deep into sandy ground”. Why “dug”?

Thanks!

I have never thought of it this way. Is there any other verb that has similar usage to “dug”?

North of the Pyrenees Mountains, the natterjack toad offers a good example of hibernation, passing the winter excavated/bored deep into sandy ground.

So, can I replace “dug” with the words underlined?
