Cook vs Peary ㅡ Which one reached the North Pole?
Currently, some scholars argue that both both men may have lied about their achievement, each coming within one hundred miles of his destination but never quite reaching it.

I'd like to know why "coming" is used, not "going."
Thank you in advance for your help.

Because the destination is taken as a reference point and from the destination's perspective the were coming, not going away. The word 'within' tells me it is the destination that counts, not the reader's location.
