Hi all,

I’m organizing an event and calling it an early Saint Patrick’s day party (it is happening a week early). I’m posting it online so I have a title, and I’m having a hard time translating it:

Early Saint Patrick’s day party
Festa del giorno di San Patrizio presto

It sounds awful! :( I don’t know where to put the “early”, and if it should be presto/in anticipo, or something else. Help!

    Hi Tegs :D!
I'd actually change it completely and say something like
I don't know why but the title in English sounds fine but its literal translation into Italian doesn't :( Anyway let's see what the others come with (hope all is well luv ;))

EDIT: Haaaa è tornata la panz :D! Ciao cara, spero anche tu tutto bene:) )

Hmm, ok, that sounds like a plan, thanks! :) Festa anticipata del giorno di San Patrizio sounds a bit more formal somehow (maybe not to Italian ears though?), and Panz seems none too happy with it (mumble mumble :D).

Out of interest, if it weren't a title (it will also be in the body of the text), could you say "festa del giorno di San Patrizio in anticipo" or would it be "festa in anticipo per il/del giorno di San Patrizio". The placement of "in anticpio" is a puzzler for me.

What about bunging in the prefix "pre-..." in there somewhere? The register would certainly be right.

    Pre-festa S. Patrizio.
    Una "pre-festa" di S. Patrizio

I like it personally. It sounds a bit quirky -- buffo e simpatico, insomma.

I dunno, something tells me it might be helpful (for cultural reasons) to stick in the adjective "irlandese" in there somewhere too. Might help to break the ice, so to speak... Similarly (tiny point): it might be clearer if festa becomes Festa... Oh, and I don't think we need to translate "Day" (capital D, folks!) at all, somehow.

    Hi Tegs,
What do you think about these solutions?

    "Festa di San Patrizio anticipata"
    "San Patrizio arriva in anticipo"
    "Festaggiamenti anticipati per Sant Patrizio"

    Sláinte

Thanks guys :) Alas, I am only seeing your replies now and I needed the answer quickly. But, I do like the new suggestions and I'm sure I can use them again, thanks ;)

Can anyone tell me whether my placement of "in antipo" was correct in post #4? Just out of interest :)

It's grammatically correct, the problem is that the whole "festa anticipata" concept is a little unusual, that's why however you word it, it will never sound very idiomatic :)

    Ciao Tegs!
