Hello:

London 2012 Olympics: A trim James Davis is thinking big after finding his cutting edge in the fencing arena

A nutritionist helps Davis maintain his figure with a seven-day eating plan
......
“Oh, I love those jaffa Cakes," Davis said. "But eating them during competition is OK for energy. I’m at my fittest now because I am eating well. It’s just so easy to put on the weight if you eat the same as you were before.

1. ...you eat the same as you were before.
2. ...you eat the same as you ate before.

I think #1 is not grammatically correct, #2 is correct.

Am I correct? Thank you.

Some similar threads, but I am still puzzled:
You are the same age as me / as mine / as I am
the same age as me / the same age as I was

No. The red font is what has been omitted and is there merely there to show the meaning.
