Eggily

Paragraph:
Yellow high streets, with yellow electrical shops, and in the windows of the multiple tailors blank - faced dummies leaning disceetly forward in eggily dark worsted.

Mia opinione:

Lo so, traduzione orribile. Da sola non ci arrivo proprio. Aiuto!

  • Ciao Elisa,

Suggerisco "invitanti" per "eggily" da "to egg on": incitare, invitare, stimolare...

    Buon lavoro,
    Anna

Eggy as an adjective is rather dated British slang meaning "angry" or "annoyed". We use to use it when I was at primary school (LESS then 20 years ago!:) ), but I haven't heard it for a long time.
Alright, alright, no need to get eggy!
Don't ask me where we got it from...

Otherwise, eggy just means covered in egg, tasting of egg, or having the constituency of egg.

"Eggily dark" has got me completely stumped, though. Worsted is not a particularly egg-like fabric (!), so I really don't know.

    Sorry!

Having polled a number of mother tongue colleagues on a couple of other lists, the consensus seems to be that the "eggily dark" is to be taken together and refers to the colour that the suits in the windows acquire due to the yellow (sodium?) street lighting.

    Most enlightening!
If anybody is interested in the whole discussion, e-mail me privately and I will forward it as a digest.
