Elderly folks

JI Seun

I wonder if the expression "Elderly folks" can also be used in a formal writing or conversation.
I heard it from a short video on youtube and wonder if it can be used in formal writings or conversations.

Elderly folks are unfortunately the target of many scammers and criminals, as there is a general belief that they will be weaker than the younger population.

No, "elderly folks" is informal/casual. In formal speech and writing, we would say, "The elderly".

The formal and politically correct term for "elderly folks" is not the same everywhere (seniors, senior citizens, etc), however, I think I can safely say that "folks" is always informal.
