Bonjour !

Je ne suis pas sûre de ma traduction pour la phrase suivante :

"Les syndicats ont rejeté les propositions patronales, nettement en retrait sur les revendications des travailleurs."

"The unions have rejected the bosses' proposals, clearly in retreat [to?] the workers' demands."

"In retreat on" n'est pas un phrase en anglais. On "retreat from," ou "retreat to," mais pas "retreat on."

Et c'est un peu étrange aussi-- les unions ont rejeté les propositions en accord avec les revendications des travailleurs.

Merci en avance!

I think it means that the propositions patronales were far from meeting the revendications des travailleurs.

Now can you put that in proper English? :D

Est-ce que ça pourrait être :

Les syndicats ont rejeté les propositions patronales, nettement en-dessous des revendications des travailleurs."

La phrase est bizarre pour moi sinon.

Valis834, definitely does not translate to definitivement (which I think is what you were trying to write). :)

I think neither Zhuli nor I were implying that the sentence you read / saw was anything but what you quoted. But we seem to be on the same track with a possible meaning / interpretation.
