In the database I find an uncompleted entry for this word. "Run aground" is there, but also "not find a partner to marry". Do you recognize this figurative sense?

Yes, "encalhar" may have this figurative meaning. Usually it has a negative tone, that is, the person wanted to marry someone, but has not found a suitable partner (or the society expected him/her to marry). Examples:

    - Minha irmã já passou dos 40 e encalhou.
    - Essa velha encalhada é muito chata! (offensive).

Thanks. I have tidied up the entry a little, but the Portuguese Base editor will have to split it into those two different senses. The day will come when the fruits of our labour can be seen online.
