enclosing a postal order for a sovereign

I'm stucked with this sentence, above all with the word "sovereign", which usually means "sovrano", but then there's no connection with the fact that we are talking about a postal order, un vaglia postale...

    Is this from an old text? Sovereign is also the old term for a gold coin in Great Britain, I believe that was equivalent to a pound.

    I agree with Rrose

    in Italian sovereign = sovrana, cioè sterlina d'oro.
