The genes contain a sequence of nucleotides. There are 4 types of nucleotide in DNA and the order in which they occur in the gene is referred to as a code. Proteins are assembled from a sequence of amino acids, and the sequence of the amino acids is determined by the sequence of the DNA nucleotides in the gene responsable for manufacturing the protein. Thus the proteins are encoded (assembled in a pre-determined sequence) by the genes.
