Engaged to be married

Hello to all!

I am having a bit of trouble understanding the difference between "comprometido" and "prometido." Can you use these words interchangeably for the word "engaged" ? Por ejemplo:

-Estoy prometida/comprometida. I'm engaged (to be married).

-Los dos se comprometieron/ se prometieron anoche. They became engaged last night.

I am also assuming that one would use "Estar" instead of "Ser" as it is (presumably!) a temporary state of being.

I could be totally wrong on this.... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Not really CleverLisa, I would say, very redundant, just to show you the usage and difference, "estoy comprometida con mi prometido", meaning something like "I am engaged with my fiancee".

I agree that used in the same breath, is not a good idea.

    "estoy comprometida con fulano"
    "fulano es mi prometido"

    are both correct, though.

What if you were dating/committed to someone, but not necessarily engaged. Could you still use "Estoy comprometido" in that situation?

I don't think we would use 'comprometido' in that case. I'd use it just when you're engaged. But wait for more answers.

I had to answer you because I just love your name. Couldn't be better!

In my region, if someone is just dating but not engaged to get married (a tradition that has become increasingly outdated), it is not likely that he would use none of these words. Thus if he/she, for example, has to politely decline an embarrassing invitation he would probably simply say “tengo pareja” instead of mentioning the word “compromiso/comprometido”.
