Ex. English-language books, Spanish-language television, etc. Is the hyphenation required, optional, or incorrect?

Thanks,
-Jonathan.

Your expression also shows how useful those hyphens can be. Strictly speaking:
English-language books = books written in the English language, or textbooks for learners of English
English language books = books about language published in England

(So the theory goes, at least.)
