enrollment through national exams or on their own behalf

Hi, everyone:

A university accepts student through two channels. One is through national exams. The other is enrollment initiated on its own behalf for some reasons, including increasing the income of the school.

The students in the first case have to reach a standard score line set by the nation.
The students in the second case may enter with a lower than standard score.

I wonder how I could use two clear terms to distinguish the two types of new college students in a text related to education.

Best wishes

It's a small point, but in BE that would be enrolment, not enrollment.
Fortunately I checked dictionaries before editing the thread title :)
