I'm learning to drive in Spain and am having some difficulty understanding the books for the theory test. I think an 'escape libre' is some sort of exhaust pipe but I don't know exactly.

The context is:

Can anybody help?

Thanks

Some vehicles, usually trucks, have a lever whereby they can cause the exhaust to bypass the muffler. When they do this, they are operating as "escape libre" or open exhaust, which tends to increase the power of the engine. Due to the noise and added contamination, this practice is mostly against the law, except on the open road in some places.

    Saludos.
