I need to translate this sentence paying particular attention to the adjective fuerte: Este estudiante está muy fuerte en matemáticas. Is strong the best option?

Es más común decir que a alguien se le da bien la historia etc...
Se me dan bien las matemáticas - "I am good/strong at maths". Lo de ser fuerte en + asignatura me suena a un calco francés/ingles, vamos por lo meno en el español de España.

O su punto fuerte son las matemáticas, expresión común en castellano ( al menos el mío).

Estoy de acuerdo contigo pero lo de ser fuerte en + asignatura a mí me suena raro. Se lo pregunté a unos amigos míos: uno de Galicia, otro de Cádiz y una de Toledo y les resulta raro lo de ser fuerte. Chauíto.

"Estar fuerte en" doesn't really sound like an English calque to me. I think "I'm strong in Math" translated back sounds a bit odd; I would put rather: "Math is my best subject," or "I'm great/really good at Math". "Strong" (at least to me) sounds more like a statistical relation between data.
