Etymology of Persian خراش/xarâŝ - scrape

    Persian xirāš “scrape” has good Iranian cognates like Sogdian xryš, Pashto gərğ. Cheung s.v *xraš writes that these “may be expressive, similar to English scratch, NHG kratzen, etc.”, to which we could indeed add Arabic x-r-š.

    Could Persian خروش ‏/xoruš "roar" also be expressive?
