Eve (Edgar Allan Poe)

Español, Venezuela
Hello everyone, I'm currently reading The Tell Tale Story by Edgar Allan Poe, and he uses the world eve in a peculiar way, refering to a blue eye, I believe:

But even yet I refrained and kept still. I scarcely breathed. I held the lantern motionless. I tried how steadily I could maintain the ray upon the eve.

But the word eve doesn't mean eye, so, anyone knows why he used that word?
