It doesn't sound natural to my ears. Is there anything missing?

Hello 0935, no, the sentence is ok and nothing is missing. Since it uses the subjunctive ("were"), it is a more formal/literary way of saying:
"It is possible, if not likely, that their results would have been even more robust if clinically severely obese individuals had been included," Ochner said.

Inversion is possible with the subjunctive "were", and that is what is happening in your sentence. See here (scroll down to "Inversion") (source: wikipedia)
