Of the news quotation, I want to know how the sentence in blue works. That is, to be specific, I at first thought it would be easier to read if it were like either of the following two;

"Everyone should take stock of the leverage to get North Korea to return to the six-party talks."

OR,

"Everyone should take stock of the leverage so that we can get North Korea to return to the six party talks."



First of my question is, are both of my alternatives correct and can be used instead of original?

Second is, will it be appropriate to view "Everyone should take stock of the leverage that we have to get North Korea to return to the six-party talks." as "so", as is suggested in my 2nd alternative, has been left out for space economy?

I wish you could catch on with what I'm wondering in my second question.

Hi Shinness. "Leverage" is something one has when "levering" something. Accordingly, in this context, she is referring to the leverage (probably of sanctions) that the world has in getting North Korea to return to the talks. Accordingly, your two sample sentences don't work because you've deleted the reference to having leverage. I think that probably also answers your second question (I hope).

I agree with dimci, i think there's a sense in the original that both of your adaptations are missing.

maybe something like this can clear up the meaning.
"Everyone should take stock of the leverage that we have. The leverage that we have can get North Korea to return to the six-party talks."
