a. I entered the room extending my hand to my host.
b. I entered the room, extending my hand to my host.

<--->

Do the above sentences work?
Are the commas needed?

The sentences are mine.

Many thanks.

    The comma is useful because is helps the reader understand that the structure is not I entered the room extending from the entrance hall to the garden (which is more frequent I think).
