I was wondering if f.a.o. might stand for "For Attention Of... .

    Yes. This is correct.

    F.A.O. John Smith = For the attention of John Smith

    Another common one is F.Y.I. = For Your Information.

    Then do you write FAO Joan Smith or For the Attention of Joan Smith?
    In the US (but it was over 20 years ago) I was familiar with Attn: Joan Smith.

    I noted the posters who are familiar with FAO are from the east side of the Atlantic.

    I'm not sure about our neighbors to the north, but here in the U.S., we tend to use Attn.
