faire la différence

Senior Member
english - U.S,
This is from a cost-benefit analysis on road infrastructure. I'm not sure how "faire la différence" should be translated here:

Enfin, on multiplie ces derniers par le quotient de décès par heure par accident pour faire la différence pour trouver le nombre de vies sauvées.

Finally, the latter are multiplied by the quotient of death per hour per accident to make the difference to find the number of lives saved.

Thank you for your help!

I guess part of the context is missing; because I understand faire la difference as subtracting a value previously calculated by this new calculated value, and the difference gives the number of lives saved.
