family hold back

Italian, Italy
who could tell me what the phrase "FAMILY HOLD BACK" means?
The context is a dialogue:

"N: I’m very proud of you darling. Have you never heard the expression ‘family hold back’?
G: Yes, I remember that well
N: I know. I’ll hold for you."

I hope you can help me
Thanks in advance

In my youth, "family hold back" (or FHB) was a familiar term. When there were guests at a meal but possibly not really enough food, "family hold back" was the signal that family members should moderate their eating so that there would be enough for the guests. It would be said, of course, out of the guests' hearing, and perhaps abbreviated to FHB.
