    "A fast cross country hike ending at a defile showed what carlo meant.to reach the same place along the rough narrow road was several times the distance, its atrocious condition forcing weis's vehicles to travel at a snail's pace

    I suggest you make three separate threads:

    1. A fast cross country hike ending at a defile showed what carlo meant. (this thread)

    2. To reach the same place along the rough narrow road was several times the distance.

    3. Its atrocious condition forcing (forced) weis's vehicles to travel at a snail's pace.

    Please give the whole of the sentence each time as context.

    Paraphrase

    A fast cross-country hike (that ended at a defile) showed (us) what Carlo meant.
