Feeling guilty irrationally?

Hi there,

Two men were complaining about marriage. One said, "The spouse who feels guilty, even irrationally, is endlessly the victim of the whims of the other, and can take no moral stand. "

In my opinion, one can feel guilty mostly because he is calm down and rational, so he knows he has done something wrong. Then he feels guilty.
But I don't understand, how could she/he feel guilty irrationally?

Sorry Copyright, I thought it didn't need source. Here is it:
Iris Murdoch's novel "The sea, the sea" - Charles went to his friend Perry, and then they recalled old days. Perry was saying about his ex-wife, Rosina, who got rid of him because she fell in love with Charles. But Perry didn't blame Charles.
