Context:
When my grandfather saw the see for the first time he was mesmerised, a feeling he had never felt so strong before.

In this context, can I use either one of the following sentences?
- a feeling he had never felt so strong before
- a feeling he had never felt so strongly before

To me, they carry the same meaning. The last one sounds a little bit more formal or literary, though.
But I can be completely wrong here.

Thank you
